360º Feedback Surveys

  • Conducted with work groups (can be census)

  • Done annually or once

  • Content focused on individual or unit improvement

  • Action taken by individual manager or work team

Surveys are not just tools to develop the whole organization. They can also be powerful aids in individual and unit improvement.

The 360º surveys provide managers feedback with development information. In this process, the manager distributes the survey to his or her direct reports, peers, supervisor, and possibly other sources such as vendors and customers. The manager also completes the survey. The focus of the survey is on the manager's behaviors and actions on the job, with the results providing useful feedback for personal and professional development.

The 360º surveys may also be constructed with the focus on a specific work team or sub-unit (for example, a specific retail store within a chain, or individual departments). Unit improvement surveys help a work team or division focus on its unique attributes and issues, discovering ways to strengthen and become more productive. These surveys are distributed to the whole group with the content focused on areas of importance to that specific group. They may be specific questions that are only answered by members of the department or work group added to a culture change census survey.

Because of the developmental nature of these surveys, it is critical that they have appropriate and well-designed support materials so that feedback recipients can use the results effectively. These materials help the users better understand and relate the results, helping them develop appropriate action plans that will enhance their work and career development.
