Census surveys help organizations better understand where they are and where they are going with regard to overall mission and objectives. Rather than focus on a specific issue, census surveys paint a big-picture view of the general state of the organization across several key dimensions. Action can then be taken on specific areas that need improvement or change.
Census surveys help identify employees' perceptions about where the organization is headed, how well it is achieving its goals, and their roles in helping reach these goals.
Feedback sessions at the work-group level encourage constructive thinking and improvement around the critical dimensions measured in the survey. Because the survey is focused on the overall organization, it is imperative that the overall organization be involved in the feedback and actions derived from the survey.
The administration of the census survey provides an ongoing agenda for improvement at all levels of the organization and helps determine if progress is being achieved. Furthermore, many organizations find that census surveys help encourage long-term focus and better understanding of how of pieces of organization processes and procedures relate to one another and to the big picture in general.
