The merger between HP and Compaq in 2002 brought together two companies that had very different backgrounds regarding employee surveys. The new organization decided to use the survey process from pre-merger Compaq. As program implementation progressed, a number of challenges emerged.
-
Management of the survey shifted away from one survey office to several governance reviews and committees.
-
Absence of experience with census surveys among many in the new organization created some conflict.
-
The hierarchy structure was constantly changing.
-
The two pre-merger computer survey systems needed to be integrated.
-
Employees were struggling with managing integration issues.
The dilemma was, how do you communicate and promote change when the integration of the two pre-merger systems is still not complete?
Genesee and HP worked in partnership to overcome these obstacles and a successful program was created. We developed new tools to help managers quickly grasp the critical information in their reports. As a result the managers became very engaged in the process. Genesee and the survey team addressed the governance committee's concerns. In addition, Genesee provided both standard and customized reporting solutions that introduced a better way for managers to communicate survey results. In many ways, because of the team's efforts, the "Voice of the Workforce" survey became a unifying force in the new HP.
