Building the Right Survey Program to Make a Difference

This story illustrates how we work with complex clients as they grow, helping them build the right survey for their organization and use it to make a difference. While this isn't the most complex survey we have done, it does show how working with Genesee and working on the issues identified in the survey can yield a more positive work environment.

Working with the client, we developed the initial survey content around the vision of the organization. Because most of the organization needed paper surveys, we printed nearly 100,000 copies in multiple languages. To make it easy for the respondents to complete, we printed the appropriate number of surveys for each of about 450 work groups and shipped them out with the work group number pre-printed. They achieved a response rate of about 57% on this first administration.

By utilizing Genesee's norms and the results of our research across many organizations, they learned that they scored among the least positive 10% of organizations. Through Genesee's analysis, four issues were identified for action and in the leadership workshop we conducted, two were selected as areas for focus. The organization did interim pulse surveys to keep the concerns of the employees in front of the organizational leadership and their results began to climb. Their initial inclination was to try to move up to the 90th percentile in just one year, but through discussion, we identified some realistic targets for units to achieve across the organization.

Now in the 6th year of administration, they have moved to 85% web administration, 67% response rate and a score that puts them close to the 60th percentile across companies. This organization continues to build the survey into the way it does business. As a result of their survey and their focused improvement efforts on the right issues, they have created a much stronger work environment – one that can attract top people and one where the people are energized to help the company fulfill its mission.
